Evil Dead The Game – An Idea for a Lovecraft / Cthulhu Expansion DLC

Evil Dead The Game is one of the best (asymmetrical) multiplayer horror games I’ve ever played, right on par if not better than Left4Dead2 when it comes to mechanics, the fun factor, and the feeling of playing a powerful evil character. So on a whim, I came up with an idea for a future DLC or expansion that I personally would love to see, and perhaps you might as well if you’re a fan of both the game and H. P. Lovecraft’s works.

My take on a Lovecraft-based DLC for Evil Dead The Game by Saber Interactive.

You see, not long ago (April 2022) I finished Elden Ring by FromSoftware and was just not impressed. Got half way through Horizon Forbidden West by Guerilla Games and got bored of that, as much I as absolutely loved Zero Dawn. I’ve been gaming since the Atari 2600, Commodore 64, and the days of 300 baud modems and a 286 CPU. I’ve been playing multiplayer games since Duke Nukem 3D when you could setup a TCP/IP network on Windows 95 (or was it 3.1?) and play with someone over the analog phone line.

When Left 4 Dead(2) came out it was such a fun and unique multiplayer experience where, I’m pretty sure, for the first time ever, you could play as the enemies, instead of most multiplayer games where both sides are fairly similar and human. Absolutely loved playing as both sides as the survivors and the… whatever they called the enemies in L4D and L4D2. Boomer is all I can remember. Maybe Licker. And there was a jumping, pouncing enemy too.

Then like 20 years later Dead By Daylight comes out, and that became my latest obsession about 3 years ago (I found out about it a bit late). It was similar to Left4Dead(2) only in the fact that you could play the evil enemy, but it is an asymmetrical multiplayer game where you are the only player on one side and have to fight the other 4 players playing as survivors. But after playing killer for about a month or two, I began to not enjoy the game so much, for various reasons I won’t get into here, mostly revolving around game balance.

Fast forward to May 2022, and I heard about Evil Dead The Game, another asymmetrical horror game, and was intrigued. I loved Evil Dead 1, 2 and the Army of Darkness. They were great for their time. Instant classics. But I was still stuck in my “I’m sick of video games right now” phase. I also got back into wildlife photography, so my mind has been focused on that a lot more even though that is only a weekend hobby.

So after debating it for a couple days, I bit the bullet and purchased Evil Dead The Game and immediately jumped into playing the demon.

I absolutely love it!

There are some issues and bugs with the game that will hopefully be addressed in the months and year(s) to come, but in my opinion, EDTG is the single best asymmetrical horror game ever made, right on par with Left4Dead as far as the fun factor and feeling like you have power.

Which finally brings us to this post. I’m also a fan of H. P. Lovecraft‘s works, even portraying Cthulhu and a Deep One on my YouTube channel (I’ve even created my own fictional universe on YouTube that spans hundreds of videos, many of which have Lovecraftian elements, but that’s another story). The original Evil Dead movies were inspired and based off of H. P. Lovecraft’s fictional necronomicon, the “book of the dead”.

In my mind, it makes perfect sense for Saber Interactive to create a Lovecraft / Cthulhu based expansion for Evil Dead The Game. Not saying they should listen to me, or use my idea, that’s now what this is all about. I would just love to see them implement Cthuhlu in some form or fashion, because it would fit perfectly into Evil Dead The Game. Not to mention the fact that H. P. Lovecraft’s works are all about fear, and fear is one of the primary mechanics in EDTG.

So I created the above image where I took illustrations from various sources and photoshopped them together to show what could possibly be done in the future for fans of both EDTG and H. P. Lovecraft, not to mention the obvious fact that the entire Evil Dead franchise owes itself to Lovecraft (although you could pretty much say that about anything horror-related since Lovecraft is pretty much the eternal King of Horror).

Here’s to hoping that Saber Interactive does this because I personally would love to summon Cthulhu as a boss. Seeing its wings flapping as it moved in mid-air like Henrietta. Instead of squeezing survivor heads with its claws, it could suck their heads and inflict damage with its tentacled face. And who knows what other powers it might have. The new basic and elite units could be insane cultists and deep ones, but I just threw that out there. It could be anything, but most folks know what a Deep One is, and cultists often appear in many of Lovecraft’s works. But honestly, anything would work as new units. Maybe a new game mechanic gets introduced called madness, or if not madness, maybe a new “insanity” effect induced by Cthulhu which does something to the survivors, sort of like how the Puppeteer electrocutes them.

As for the new survivors, I would like to think one of them would be a police detective type, maybe another could be versed in things esoteric and has some strange mystical powers. Who knows! And lastly, the new map location could be Devil Reef (or Devil’s Reef), a famous location in Lovecraft’s works, which would be an island, and would include a giant shipwreck (like the crashed plane), which would explain how the survivors got there (unless they came by a smaller boat to investigate the island).

All I know is that I just want to play Cthulhu in the game and terrorize the survivors with eldritch horror and madness!!!
